In many countries, parents have different color preferences for male versus female children, and children are exposed to colors related to their genders. These results suggest that red background color interacting with facial configuration features biases gender perception toward a female face, possibly through top-down processing of learned associations between the color red and femininity.Ĭolors are associated with gender stereotypes (e.g., pink-girl/blue-boy) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. However, this red effect was diminished when the face stimulus was inverted (Experiment 2). Results showed that a red background could bias the gender of an ambiguous upright face toward a female compared with green and gray background colors (Experiment 1). Participants were instructed to categorize the gender of the face stimulus as male or female by pressing one of two labelled keys. The face stimulus was presented upright (Experiment 1) and inverted (Experiment 2) with three background colors (i.e., red, green, and gray). Visual stimuli were generated from faces whose sexually dimorphic content was morphed monotonically from female to male perception. This study explored whether background color could influence the gender categorization of human faces. Color carries gender information (e.g., red-female).

On the set of Into The Dark episode Uncanny Annie (2019). Paul sat down with the Squid to talk to us about his sell-out book, which is now on its third edition, and his career in the world of horror filmmaking. Special-effects mastermind Rick Baker echoed this sentiment, saying, “It was so nice to see An American Werewolf in London treated with that much love and respect. Landis himself has gone so far as to call the book “the most complete and accurate account of the making of An American Werewolf in London“. The book features over 300 behind-the-scenes photos, as well as interviews with over 35 members of the original cast and crew. Seven years on, Paul produced his book adaptation by the same name, delving even further into the story behind the iconic production. Back in 2009, he directed, wrote and presented the documentary Beware The Moon: The Story of an American Werewolf in London, which looked fondly back on director John Landis’ horror classic. Most recently, Paul has written and directed for the Blumhouse/Hulu hit series Into The Dark, a horror anthology first released in October 2018. Writer/director Paul Davis is an active part of the horror community, both in front of and behind the camera. It's flooded, but the owners have pumped out enough water to expose a couple stories of discolored steel infrastructure. Beneath them is the underground silo they were built to protect. They're actually doors nearly half a century old. Near the Quonset huts, surrounded by Chevalier's trucks and cranes, are two massive, metal-rimmed blocks of concrete. The plot belongs to the Chevalier Drilling Company. It leads to a pair of round-roofed, metal buildings called Quonset huts, which are partly obscured by a stand of trees and surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. Not far from town is a long, unmarked driveway, a little wider and straighter than the others. The driveways lead to farmhouses, barns and tall, silver silos.īut there's another kind of silo here, too. Travel down Swanton's Middle Road, and you're surrounded by pasture. Rumors of his fate circulated among his loyal fans. Jonathan Yardley dubbed the 756-page saga, “a homoerotic blaxploitation fantasia that is spellbinding only as a testament to the author’s racial naiveté.”ĭemoralized by disappointing sales, Mr. But the movie, starring former child star Corey Feldman, never saw theatrical release.Ī short time later, ReganBooks published Frey’s debut novel, Destiny’s Homeboy, which press materials described as “an effort to recast War & Peace in the hip-hop milieu.”Ĭritics were less generous. He was 61 years old.įrey became a household name in 2005, when his best-selling memoir of addiction and recovery, A Million Little Pieces, was debunked as fiction. James Frey, the disgraced author whose literary career was supplanted by turns as a reality TV star, ad pitchman, and philanthropist, was found dead of a heart attack in his Los Angeles mansion. Jakov Lind has a style all of his own that makes Soul of Wood all the more haunting and surreal. With a biting wit=and wild prose that exemplifies the untamed and savage human heart, Lind’s vivid imaginative vision has the reader running like cockroaches into the dark recesses of humanity to survive in an untamed realm where the sunshine of morality can’t be counted on to light the way. These are unflinching stories bearing shadows of the holocaust and the only comfort therein is the dark humor that keeps you laughing through the onslaught of degradation, a laughter that sounds strangely like the creaking and cracking of a soul in a storm. Jakov Lind’s superb short story collection Soul of Wood examines morality through it’s ugly and sinister negation, delivering seven sadistic and deeply allegorical stories following those who trade morality to prolong their mortality. We are all endowed with a survival instinct whose gears whir up at the borderlines of life and death and bestow blinders on our rationality to keep the goal of survival-at-all-costs the only clear victory. To escape from hell he promised everything.’ If the novel I’ve just described sounds rather bleak, let me assure you that it’s just the opposite-joyful, exhilarating, and brimming with comic invention. Forced to start anew in midlife, Macon becomes depressed, ends up breaking his leg, and falls into a new relationship with a kooky dog trainer. After Macon’s son dies in a violent tragedy, he and his wife are consumed with grief and end up separating. My favorite Anne Tyler novel is THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST-the story of Macon Leary, a travel writer who hates to travel. There’s something about her style and voice that I find irresistible. She’s my go-to writer any time I need a shot of inspiration I’ll just open any of her books and start reading, and within 30 minutes I am fully recharged. Whenever someone raises the subject of “favorite author,” my Comic-Con friends are usually surprised by my answer: Anne Tyler, author of so-called “family novels” and “marriage novels” like DINNER AT THE HOMESICK RESTAURANT, BREATHING LESSONS, and A SPOOL OF BLUE THREAD. My job sends me to a lot of comic book conventions, so I’ve spent many hours in a 10×10 booth chatting with science fiction, fantasy, and horror enthusiasts. Some turned to alcohol as a comfort as Harley does, while others committed suicide, unable to cope with the changed worldview. Like Tayo, many struggled to go back to their previous daily lives. In the aftermath of World War II, many veterans returned with no resources to address the mental health issues caused by the intense situations and trauma they faced in the war.
